What Can You do in Bioscience?

Bioscience is any of the areas of scientific study that relate to living organisms. This field involves the application of the knowledge of sciences to develop solutions that improve the quality of life of humans, plants, and animals. All the technology related to life that we used today is based on bioscience. From lifesaving procedures to food with long shelf life, we have transformed our lives through the help of bioscience.

But what exactly you can be in this vast field? What can you work as after studying these overlapping scientific areas like biochemistry, zoology, botany, microbiology, etc? Well, the careers in these fields are as diverse as they can be. Let us go through some of the options:

  1. 1. Epidemiologist:

Whenever a widespread occurrence of a disease (epidemic) appears, it is an epidemiologist’s job to investigate the scene. They are often known as “disease detectives.” Their work involves finding the cause of the disease, identifying people who are at risk, and methods of preventing the spread of the disease. [1]

Dr. Leonora Orantes, the epidemiologist in the movie “Contagion.”

  1. 2. Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) Officer:

Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) Officer’s work is similar to that of epidemiologists. They work as the front lines of public health by protecting the global community. Just like epidemiologists, when a disease outbreak takes place, they investigate, identify the cause, and develop preventive measures from collecting evidence. [2]

  1. 3. Virologist:

Virologists' responsibility is to find out about viruses, their origin, and their infections. Apart from that, another huge part of a virologist’s job is to research and develop pharmaceuticals antiviral drugs. Adding to that, they also study the evolution of viruses and the development of effective vaccines. [3]

  1. 4. Molecular Biologist:

A microbiologist deals with research and academic activities. The research component includes the study of biological structures at a microscopic level with the aid of technology. The lab equipment includes a centrifuge, electronic microscopes, and advanced computers that can record and analyze data. [4]

Dr. Sebastian Caine and his coworkers are molecular biologistin the movie “Hollow man”

  1. 5. Veterinarian:

The duties of a veterinarian include examination of animals for health problems, performing surgeries, euthanizing animals, vaccinating the animal. The most significant role of a veterinarian is to advise animal owners about general care-taking staff and basic health problems. [5]

  1. 6. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT):

The responsibilities of an Emergency Medical Technician can be a bit challenging. They must be alert all the time! Their services include the provision of first aid like wound dressing or providing life care support like Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). An EMT can assess a patient’s condition if he/she needs to go to the emergency room (ER). [6]

  1.  Genetic Engineers:

A genetic engineer’s job involves highly trained experts that can use a variety of advanced tools to rearrange and manipulate the fragments of DNA. Imagine how hard and complicated that job would be! Besides that, genetic engineers modify living organisms in the lab and keep publishing research papers related to their work. [7]

Clive Nicoli and Elsa Kast are two genetic engineers in the movie “Splice”

These are just a few careers that I listed from the science fiction movies (Contagion, Hollow man, WWZ, and Splice). We should be considerate about not neglecting these careers as these cool science learners are making our lives easier. Whether it is for a painkiller for a headache or saving an extinct species.

In the end, we can conclude that the diversity bioscience holds in its hands is what makes this subject the most unique of all sciences we study in school or college. But no matter how important we consider mathematics and physics as the smartest subject, bioscience compared to them is more interesting. This subject makes you contemplate and its variety of career choices is what makes it stand out.
